By Ginna Young Facing two non-conference opponents over the week, the Cadott baseball program claimed victory in one of two of the matches.
April 8 vs. Elmwood non-conference (W 16-6) Beginning the week by hosting Elmwood, the Hornets fell behind early, but they weren’t down and out, as fans became aware of.
“After falling behind 5-0 after the first, we got the bats going and pitching settled in, and we were able to get the win,” said coach Brandon Geist.
Bringing a lone run in after the second inning, the offense came alive and the Hornets had three runs cross the plate the next inning, before knocking in five runs in the fourth inning. Cadott would go on to add seven more runs in the next two innings, to take a 16-6 victory.
Sophomore Isaac Wellner went two innings on the mound, giving up 3 hits and 5 runs, along with 3 walks, while striking out 3. Freshman Jake Weeks then went three innings, only allowing a run and 3 walks, and striking out 5. Senior Warren Bowe then finished it out, striking out 3 batters.
Offensively, Wellner and junior Michael Wellner each had 3 hits, with freshman Drew Rykal adding 2 hits, while Bowe, junior Gabe Sikora and Weeks each had a hit.
“Everyone got in on the action last night, so a great team win last night,” said Geist.
April 14 vs. Neillsville non-conference (L 16-3) After a long break, the Hornets were back in action at home, going up against Neillsville, who was on target. Cadott fell behind early on once more, but were unable to dig themselves out of the hole this time, as the visitors racked up 16 runs over the game, opposed to Cadott scoring only three runs.
Junior Aiden Rykal was on the mound for the Hornets for two innings, giving up 3 hits, 4 runs and 4 walks, while I. Wellner went three innings, allowing up 6 hits, 12 runs and 7 walks, while striking out 7 batters. Weeks also took a turn, walking a batter and striking out a batter.
